Styling the Basics: From Day to Night

Stick with me, because some of this probably seems elementary to many of you. I'm spending so much time on basics this week because I want you to understand that classic, structured, simple pieces can be worn in A TON of different ways. Didn't think you could wear a pencil skirt outside a job interview? Think again! Here are some tips for styling your basics for day and night!

1. The Pencil Skirt:
Everyone knows the basic work interview formula: black pencil skirt, white button down, black heels, black blazer. Add in a few more pieces, and you can change your look easily! For the daytime, try boots with your pencil skirt for a cool updated-schoolgirl look. A crossbody bag will make it more casual. For night, swap out the white button-down for an embellished top and ditch the blazer (*gasp* I can't believe I said that) for a fancier look!

Basics: Pencil Skirt
2. The LBD:
Usually, one pairs an LBD with heels and *poof*, its cocktail ready! Instead of heels, try a grown-up flat to dress it down. A blazer and crossbody will have a similar effect. For night, the LBD+heels formula is a no-brainer.

3. The Trouser:
Like the pencil skirt, the trouser is generally seen as an interview piece. Worn with a white button-down, it can generally look professional. Again, flats and a crossbody will minimize this effect while making you still look simply chic. For night, break out that embellished top again and pumps for a look worthy of Miranda Kerr.
